The Carter House will target women and families who:

  • Must relinquish care of their children to access treatment.
  • Are seeking treatment to regain custody of their children.
  • Are at risk of having their children apprehended due to substance use.

Job Overview 

We are seeking a detail-oriented, creative, and intelligent cook for our centre who is able to order food and think critically about how best to organize and prepare meals for our families.  Our cook prepares the food for three meals per day and will assist another centre staff over meal times to serve the food in a plate service to clients in the centre.  The cook will ensure our kitchen runs smoothly and effectively.  They also keep track of kitchen inventory and promote food safety.  They maintain cleanliness and order in the kitchen.  This position works 10 hour shifts, four days per week, and will overlap with our other fulltime cook one day per week.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Understanding and maintenance of quality and safety in the kitchen
  • Ensuring that food is prepared and stored in accordance with health and safety regulations
  • Experience with different cooking tools, equipment, and utensils
  • Expert knowledge of various cooking and preparation methods and procedures
  • Expert knowledge of safe food handling and storage theory and techniques
  • Expert knowledge of food contamination prevention
  • Experience monitoring and minimizing waste
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to withstand long hours of standing, bending, and moving around
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics to ensure correct measurement of ingredients
  • Ability to follow recipe instructions
  • Ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and order
  • Comfort and experience in training others in preparation, cooking, and handling of foods
  • Ability to make adjustments to accommodate clients with specific diet and health concerns
  • Knowledge of setting up cook workstation
  • Coordination and time management
  • Experience in cost management
  • Punctuality and professionalism

Qualifications

  • Red Seal certification would be preferred but not required
  • 3 – 5 years of cooking experience
  • Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check

Expected Salary Range: $20 – $24 hourly
